Feds providing $5.2-million in housing funds for North Grenville

New federal funding is being put towards building hundreds of new homes over the coming years in North Grenville.

Jenna Sudds, the federal Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, announced today that more than $5.2-million from the Housing Accelerator Fund is going to the municipality.

Alongside that funding, she said the federal government will work with the municipality to overhaul local zoning by-laws, to help speed up the process for building new homes.

“These actions together will help fast-track 170 desperately needed new homes here in North Grenville, a rapidly growing town,” Sudds explained, “and this work will also help spur the construction of 1,700 new homes over the next decade.”

Mayor Nancy Peckford said there are a lot of people in the community that will benefit from these changes.

“We know that the dollars being provided today come at a pivotal time in our efforts to confront a deepening housing crisis,” she said.

During a media question-and-answer period after the announcement, Peckford, in her capacity as Warden of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, also said conversations are underway in other nearby communities to provide similar funding.
