Local politicians are taking to social media in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II passing away.
“Grateful for her service to others,” says Michael Barrett, the MP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. “God bless Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
Mayor Nancy Peckford is echoing similar sentiments, calling the late monarch a “phenomenal leader.”
“Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning monarch in the history of Canada,” Peckford says. “Her Majesty was an integral part of the fabric of the Commonwealth. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and to the Royal Heir.”
According to Buckingham Palace officials, the Queen passed away at her home in Scotland Thursday afternoon. She was 96 years old.
