740 kilometer relay race for mental health awareness passes through Kemptville Saturday

A week-long mental health fundraising event is coming to Kemptville Saturday.

The Mood Disorders Society of Canada (MDSC) has sponsored the seventh annual Canal Pursuit for Mental Health Relay Run, a 740 kilometer relay run that begins in Port Severn and ends on Parliament Hill, and which will pass through Kemptville at 10:00 am Saturday. The relay began on the 21st, with runner Clay Williams leading the relay team to each run 10 kilometers per day as they made the journey. Williams organized the relay to honor his family members who suffer from mood disorders, and his brothers who took their own lives. The run is raising awareness and funds for mental illness.

“The conversation that we want to support with this project is two-fold”, said Clay.“First, if you’re struggling with a mood disorder, talk to someone you trust. The second part of the message is that physical activity can help make many symptoms of mood disorders more manageable, fitting in with the national Defeat Depression campaign.”

The MDSC is a not-for-profit national charity geared towards advocacy and fundraising for people who suffer from mood disorders like PTSD and depression.

The runners will be briefly stopping in the parking lot of the Kemptville B&H on Saturday. For information on how to donate, visit the MDSC website.
