Overwhelming response to vandalism at Baxter Conservation Area

The response from people to the vandalism at the Baxter Conservation Area has been overwhelming.

That is according to Director of Communications Diane Downey who also says they’ve set up a donation opportunity  for those looking to help. The Baxter River Cabin Improvement Fund has been created through their website here.

Downey says cleanup was done right away so it was safe for visitors and now it is a matter of making improvements and replacing items. Downey adds they are working with insurance to determine what costs will be.

“I think the saddest thing was definitely the woodstove store, you know, being broken, smashed (and) it was new.”

Downey says the primary use of the cabin is for community groups like guides and scouts to have a spot to gather before a day out in nature.

Downey also says this vandalism is rare for them and probably the biggest that has happened there.

Downey adds they really appreciate everyone’s offers of support as staff have been trying for the past few months to keep the space open as the pandemic continues.
