Bag tags still required

If you’re putting out garbage in North Grenville, you still need to use bag tags.

Mayor Nancy Peckford says the program generates significant revenue for the municipality, totalling in the area of $39,000 per month. She noted the municipality is already taking a financial hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, through the loss of facility rental dollars.

Peckford explained that she’s not sure whether the municipality could absorb the cost of suspending the program, which brings in approximately $425,000 annually to pay for waste collection.

The municipality has extended the deadline for interim property taxes until June 30 and is waiving all new penalty and interest charges. The same goes for water bills.

Peckford says council plans on discussing additional economic relief measures for local residents and businesses in the coming days and weeks. She noted bag tags will be part of those discussions.

The municipality had partnered with the Knights of Columbus to provide bag tags to people in need and Southgate Community Church has also offered to supply them for free.
