Music has been a passion for Stephen Fuller since childhood. The St. Michael Catholic High School alumnus, class of 2007, decided to follow his passion five years ago. He released a solo album, titled Colibri – the French word for hummingbird – in 2016.
Fuller says the album landed him a gig co-composing music for This Mountain Life, which tells the story of high-altitude human endurance in the peaks of British Columbia. He noted in the creative business, you put yourself out there and it leads to other opportunities.
The award-winning documentary follows Martina Halik and her 60-year-old mother Tania as they trek 2,300 kilometers from Canada to Alaska, along with a group of nuns who live in a mountain retreat and a couple that has been living off-grid for nearly 50 years.
Fuller plays the Kora – a west African harp – and the keyboard to compose. He explained the music in the film was driven by the characters and their relationship with the Rocky Mountains.
Fuller says it took about 10 days to write and record the music for This Mountain Life, alongside director and co-composer Grant Baldwin. He noted the documentary was released in 2018 and was well-received by audiences. Fuller explained it’s inspiring and truly captures the human spirit.
