Oxford-On-Rideau parents ask community for help

The movement to keep Oxford-On-Rideau Public School open has gained momentum. The Upper Canada District School Board announced the school in Oxford Mills will not close in June. The closure date has been pushed to 2021.

The school’s parent council put out a call for ideas on the Oxford SOS (Save Our School) Facebook page.

Member Brent Lekx-Toniolo says this is a two-year reprieve to find out why numbers are so low and what can be done to get them back up.

The parent council is asking people in the catchment area who don’t send their kids to Oxford to provide feedback. The group is also seeking input from parents of existing students.

Lekx-Toniolo says there is work to be done and it’s time to find out what happened to the school in the first place. He says before the parent council was in survival mode and now it’s time to thrive.

Oxford currently has a Tech Club, where kids learn about coding. The parent council is also looking at daycare options for the school. Lekx-Toniolo says the group will consider any ideas that might give the school an edge.

Kindergarten registration is open at Oxford. For more information about the school, click here.
