Councillor ‘insulted’ by committee appointments

Councillor Craig McCormick spoke out about committee appointments. Mayor Nancy Peckford outlined the new council roles last night. Each member of council is assigned to sit on different boards and committees.

McCormick, a retired OPP officer, says he should have been considered for the North Grenville Police Services Board (PSB). He says he only found out he was not considered when reviewing the meeting’s agenda. McCormick says he reached out to Peckford, who put forward the recommendations, and her response was that she took into account council member’s requests.

Don Sherritt, Chair of the PSB, spoke about who could and couldn’t serve on the board. He says police officers can’t be on the board due to potential conflicts of interest.

McCormick says he retired over a year ago. Former Mayor David Gordon, a retired officer, sat on the PSB.

McCormick says at no point has be received the rationale behind the decision. He says he takes it as an insult.

Peckford says she got advice and feedback about appointments from a variety of committees and boards. She says there were multiple expressions of interest for the PSB and trade-offs had to be made. Peckford further noted that Councillor Doreen O’Sullivan, a former nurse, was not appointed to the Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) Board.

O’Sullivan was appointed to the PSB and McCormick will sit on the KDH Board.

Other committee appointments are as follows: Councillor John Barclay (Heritage Advisory Committee, Ferguson Forest Centre Board and Rideau Heritage Tourism Association), McCormick (Kemptville College Foundation and Emergency Management Committee), O’Sullivan (North Grenville Public Library Board and Active Transportation Advisory), Councillor Jim McManaman (Chamber of Commerce, Business Improvement Area and Economic Development) and Peckford (Police Services Board, Economic Development and North Grenville Accessible Transportation).
