Brockville Police arrested a 15-year-old youth in relation to the death of Damian Sobieraj at Hardy Park.
The youth, who can’t be named, will appear in bail court this afternoon. The youth faces charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, obstructing police and assault.
Sobieraj called police on the evening of September 13 and said he was in an altercation with a group of youths. Before he could give his name and location, the call was dropped. Officers responding to the scene stopped persons leaving the park who indicated they knew nothing about the incident.
Officers later identified the caller by obtaining subscriber information from the caller’s phone. With assistance from the Brockville Police K9 unit, the entire park was searched and no other persons found. Sobieraj’s dog Rosie was located.
OPP Underwater Search & Rescue Unit found the body of Sobieraj the next day. The 33-year-old was located in the river a short distance from the shoreline of Hardy Park.
Four detectives have been working full time on the investigation leading up to today’s arrest.
