Seed plant closure to be reviewed

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is reviewing the decision to close the Ontario Tree Seed Plant in Angus. The closure put the Ferguson Forest Centre (FFC) at risk, along with 13 full-time jobs and over $1 million coming into the local economy each year.

The FFC made the move to construct its own seed storage facility on site.

Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark says he is pleased that MNRF Minister Jeff Yurek will review the previous government’s decision.

Yurek made the announcement last week. He says after hearing concerns related to the closure, he directed the ministry to review the decision.

Yurek says the ministry will take the time to hear from stakeholders, including sit down meetings with the tree nursery industry.

The seed plant was scheduled to close in September.
