Girls Inc. Summer Wrap Up

Girls Inc. of Upper Canada are celebrating a summer of helping young girls better themselves.

According to Girls Inc. almost 200 girls were part of summer programs in 2017 across Brockville, Gananoque, Kemptville, Portland and Prescott. One of the standout events was their IT! DIY Summer Camp. Described as a “minds on, hands on” experience by Girls Inc. the camp gave girls from 6-13 the chance to ask questions, solve problems and challenge stereotypes that are attached to women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. There were also games, crafts, role playing and discussions designed to address topics like bullying, body image, self-esteem, physical activity, nutrition and stress management.

Girls experienced the “Chocolate Conundrum” during the camp, where someone had taken a bite of a chocolate bar and it was their job to find out who. The participants took fingerprints samples, made dental impressions, analysed hair samples and measured foot prints to solve the case. The activity ended with a mock trial where the evidence was presented against the accused. According to Girls Inc. exposure to math and science programming helps girls envision future educational and career opportunities.

Over the course of the summer forty four per cent of the participants received a subsidy. Over $5,000 was given out so girls could participate in Girls Inc. activities.
