OPP launching campaign to reduce 911 pocket dials

The OPP is launching a fall campaign to tackle the issue of pocket dialing 911.

The OPP says that it is tackling the issue because it says that more than 2,000 confirmed pocket dials and more than 30,000 unknown wireless calls happened in 2016 alone.

The #KnowWhenToCall campaign will be in place to further educate the public on unintentional and pocket dial calls to 911.

The OPP says it has already launched a social media campaign to get the word out.

Locally, the police services board and the Grenville County OPP have tackled the issue more than once with local campaigns. It was revealed at a recent board meeting that they had seen a drop in the number of unintentional calls, but that it is still a problem.

The issue is both one of safety and of extra costs for policing when officers must respond to non-emergency calls.
