Federal government conditionally approves Northern Gateway pipeline

The federal government has conditionally approved the Northern Gateway pipeline, with 209 conditions. The project still faces legal challenges from several First Nations and environmental groups. The controversial $6.5-billion project is a proposed 1,177-kilometre twin pipeline that would carry diluted bitumen from Alberta to the town of Kitimat on the British Columbia coast, where it would be shipped overseas by oil tankers.
