Local business leader says it’s important to shop local with tariff war looming

The Chair of the South Grenville Chamber of Commerce says it’s important to put our local businesses first with a tariff war looming between Canada and the United States.

U.S. President Donald Trump will impose 25 per cent penalties on all Canadian imports except energy as of Tuesday with a ten per cent surcharge on electricity, natural gas, and oil.

Ottawa plans to retaliate with immediate tariffs on 30-billion dollars worth of American imports.

Kevin Spencer says many local businesses are focused on getting the best quality and value for their customers meaning they might get that from the United States before passing it on to consumers.

He adds that focusing specifically on where certain products came from is not helping our businesses at all.

Spencer tells the Moose FM Newsroom that just what’s going to happen remains to be seen.

“Anybody who doesn’t think it’s going to affect us, it’s going to affect all of us, the question is how long it’s going to affect us for and how lasting the impact is going to be.”

President Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke twice on the phone on Monday about the situation.
