Prescott looking at asking for re-examination of OPP billing

Prescott is preparing to ask for the billing of Ontario Provincial Police services be re-examined.

Municipalities currently pay for OPP services with money taken from property taxes and, under a new collective bargaining agreement that includes a raise for officers and civilian staff, some areas are seeing the fees rise significantly.

At their meeting on Monday night, Prescott Town Council will vote to call on the province to re-examine the billing.

A copy of the resolution would be sent to officials including Premier Doug Ford, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, and all municipalities in Leeds and Grenville.

Friday morning, the Ontario government announced that they are proposing to give municipalities a “3.75 per cent bill reduction on 2023 total reconciled costs, a 44 per cent bill reduction on 2023 reconciled overtime costs, and a 10 per cent bill reduction on amounts invoiced for 2025 policing costs.”

The proposal would need to pass in the Ontario Legislature.
