Keeping the proper safety gear on board can save your or someone you love’s life.
That message from the Leeds and Grenville OPP Marine Unit who say small vessels like canoes and kayaks are required to have mandatory safety equipment.
That includes a personal flotation device or life jacket per person (appropriately sized for the individual), 15 metres of rope, a sound signaling device like a whistle and an extra paddle.
You’re also required to have a water bailing device and a watertight flashlight.
Charges can be laid to those who don’t have the proper equipment.
