The keys are in hand and their new lives are about to begin.
A Key Ceremony was held at Kemptville College on Tuesday afternoon to mark the opening of Kemptville Korners, a 15-unit development by Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa.
The two-three storey buildings are located at the Kemptville Campus, off Concession Road, and were built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands.
They are geared towards families with children under the age of 18 and construction began in 2022.
In order to live in the units, families had to meet criteria including contributing 500 volunteer hours and they were purchased at fair market value with 30 per cent of a homeowners monthly income going towards a mortgage payment.
Andre, his wife and their six children are moving into one of the units after first coming to Canada from Cameroon four years ago.
He says they had a tough beginning.
“We were living in really poor and unsafe conditions in a two bedroom basement apartment.”
He adds they couldn’t expect anything better than what they have now and says they are very thankful to Habitat for Humanity.
