Local charity hoping to build 40 small homes to help relieve poverty

A Kemptville-based charity is aiming to relieve local poverty by building sustainable small homes for people over 55.

Shalom Small Homes recently broke ground on the site of its first four homes in the town, located at 508 Kernahan Street, along James Street.

It’s the beginning of what organizers say they hope will be an eventual 40 affordable housing units for the vulnerable age group with rent set at one-third of the resident’s income.

The land for the homes is owned by the Municipality of North Grenville, which signed a 40-year lease with Shalom at a rate of $1 annually.
