East Region OPP laid over 2,700 charges during Canada Road Safety Week

Police say it’s not about the tickets and charges, it’s about modifying driver behaviours to make our rodways safer for everyone.

East Region Ontario Provincial Police laid 2,278 charges during Canada Road Safety Week, from May 14 to May 20, including the Victoria Day long weekend.

The initial results included 1,522 drivers charged for speeding, 41 for stunt driving and 55 for impaired driving.

OPP officers say they will continue to focus throughout the summer on the “Big Four” factors in serious and fatal collisions: aggressive driving, inattentive driving, impaired driving and lack of occupant restraints. This includes the major highways and all other roads.

A plane from the OPP Aviation Services provided an additional perspective for officers, resulting in numerous charges.

That plane will be back in the area over the summer months.
