Now’s the time to start looking into putting your winter tires on, according to the OPP.
Provincial Constable Dave Holmes says it’s better to have them put on early, before any snow starts falling, so you’ll be ready when the temperature starts to drop.
“Right now, I think people see temperatures ahead for the next couple of days and see that maybe it’s going to be 15 or 20 degrees, and they think, ‘that’s fantastic for October,’” Holmes says, “but if you look a little bit further ahead, the temperatures also dip down at night, and there’s some days when the temperatures are in the single digits.”
When it gets cold like that, Holmes says winter tires will help you deal with sudden freezing on the roads.
Holmes also says you should check weather forecasts before going out and pay attention to sudden weather changes like storms.
“Drivers sometimes get a little bit caught off guard, because maybe they fail to do that as much as they should,” he says, “and I think everyone is guilty of that at some point.”
He also says you should also consider getting some new windshield wiper blades to make clearing your windshield easier once the snow starts falling.
