Fire Officials Encouraging Residents To Get Their Burn Permit And Use Extra Caution Ahead Of Grass Fire Season

With grass fire season practically upon us, local fire departments are reminding residents of some rules of thumb when it comes to burning.

North Grenville Deputy Fire Chief Randy Urslak is asking residents to make sure they get their burn permit before starting any fires on their property.

Urslak says the most important thing is to follow the rules and use common sense.

“Most people don’t understand until an out of control fire happens to them,” Urslak said. “You just have to abide by the rules, make sure you have the proper clearances, you’re not near any fence lines, tree lines, your home, and you’re burning the proper items. The only thing your burn permit allows you to burn is untreated wood.”

While the risk of fires is relatively low at this time, it’s important to be aware of what to do if a fire gets out of control.

Urslak says while the ground may be wet from the thaw, exposed patches of dead grass can be extremely susceptible to starting a fire.

“The ground might be wet but the plantation on top of it is all dead and paper-like, and with any kind of wind at all it will travel like gasoline,” Urslak said. “It’s extremely flammable, and that’s the dangerous part so, until it greens up, it’s the worst time to burn.”

Urslak adds he’s happy to come out and help anyone who has questions about burn permits or how to handle fires.
