The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is warning residents to remove fishing huts along water bodies in our region to combat thinning ice conditions
Under Ontario law, the deadline for removing huts is March 15, however, with daily temperatures sitting higher than they were this time last year, the RVCA says you should remove the huts sooner rather than later.
According to the RVCA, it’s an offence under the Public Lands Act to leave your ice hut out after ice break up, even if that occurs before the removal deadline.
You’re encouraged to take this week to collect your belongings, dispose of your garbage and dismantle any structures you’ve built on the ice.
Before going out, you should let others know where you are going, and when you plan to return.
You should also be wearing appropriate clothing, and bringing the proper safety equipment including a life jacket, cell phone, ice pick and throw rope.
