Mission trip a life changing experience for local students

Five St. Michael Catholic High School students are back from a mission trip to Guatemala. Charis Boland, Madeline Hubbard, Katrina Workman, Colleen Duggan and Alyson Stewart left on February 9 and returned February 17.

The grade 11 and 12 students worked on a road and painted houses in a mountain village near Antigua.

Duggan told a story about a little boy who got her water while she painted. She says the small gesture was really special because she doesn’t even talk to half her neighbours here, but there the people don’t even know you and think of you as family. Duggan says the love and appreciation really touched her.

Workman says the last meal in the village was humbling. She says the people have so little, but they still want to give everything they have to show their gratitude.

All five say the trip changed their outlook on life.
