Ottawa Police Service looking at keeping people safe in school zones this month

Police in Ottawa will be focusing on school zone and school bus safety this month.

The Ottawa Police Service says officers will be focusing on these safety items through their Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). Police say between 2011 and 2015, there were 900 collisions involving school buses or occurring in school zones. Those collisions resulted in more than 200 injuries.

The Ottawa Police Service says officers will also be on the lookout for the lack of, or improper use of seatbelts in vehicles throughout the month.

The STEP program is part of the Safer Roads Ottawa Program. The Ottawa Police Service says it’s in partnership with the Ottawa Fire Service, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Ottawa Public Health and the Transportation Services Department for the Safer Roads Ottawa Program.
