The North Grenville senior girls basketball team were the B division finalists at the St. Mary Invitational tournament in Brockville on the weekend. In their first game of the tournament the Knights could not overcome an eye injury to starting point guard Darien Wrona and fell 40-30 to St. Joseph. Led by 18 points from Emma Kiesekamp the Knights stayed with St. Joes until having to foul in the last 3 minutes. In their second game of the day the Knights coasted to a 48-32 victory over Perth. Wrona scored 14 of her game high 16 points in the decisive third quarter.
In the “B” semi finals NG dominated Notre Dame des Lourdes 45-17 which put them in the finals against LGSSAA rivals Rideau. Having already lost to Rideau by 18 in league play the Knights were determined to put a stronger effort in. The game went back and forth until Rideau gained a 5 point advantage late in the game. NG narrowed it to 3 with 15 seconds left. An inbounds play to Shawn Pignon led to a clutch game tying 3 by the grade 10 student sending the game to overtime. Overtime was similar as the Knights found themselves trailing by 3 until Korey Watson hit a buzzer beating 3 point shot to send it to double overtime. This time Rideau held on to win a thrilling 49-47 game.
The Knights next action is Thursday when they travel across town for a matchup against Chris Finner’s St. Mikes Mustangs.
