Driver’s reminded to move over for emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated

Police say paying attention to what’s happening on the side of the road is a part of safe driving.

Ahead of the Civic Holiday long weekend, one of the busiest traffic long weekends of the year, Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers that they are required to follow the move over law.

The law requires all drivers to slow down when approaching emergency vehicles with their emergency lights activated and, on highways or roads with more than one lane, moving over a lane if safe to do so.

OPP say they laid 1,971 charges last year against drivers who didn’t follow the law.

Along with making sure drivers are following the rule, officers will also be working across the province to ensure motorists are driving attentively and within the posted speed limit, are not impaired by alcohol or drugs and that everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.
