Education workers throughout the Upper Canada District School Board are at a breaking point.
That’s according to the union that represents 1,650 staff at the UCDSB including educational assistants, secretaries, and registered early childhood educators.
Canadian Union of Public Employees 5678 says underfunding and understaffing plague the board with students’ needs going unmet and incidents of violence skyrocketing.
The union says 80 per cent of its workers say they experience violence on the job, with over 50 per cent of educational assistants and child and youth workers saying it happens every day.
Union officials say students desperately need more supports, which requires the UCDSB to hire hundreds more support staff, and they have launched a petition and are calling for signatures.
Moose FM has reached out to the UCDSB for comment on the petition and claims made.
