North Grenville Mayor Nancy Peckford says hundreds of millions of dollars in community-driven affordable housing initiatives hang in the balance.
In an op-ed published in the Ottawa Citizen, Peckford says North Grenville has applied for $25 million from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for the re-purposing of Bell Hall, located on Kemptville Campus, into quality, affordable housing.
The project would see 60 rental units created for seniors and veterans.
However, Peckford says the municipality’s application was left in limbo after the federal election was called and she adds that, with a new government coming in, the risk now increases that well-developed, shovel-ready projects could be stalled for a long time, if not indefinitely.
She tells Moose FM that she had a clear goal when putting her piece together.
“Urge the new government, whoever the Prime Minister is, whatever the party is, to ensure that they action what are considered some extremely well-considered, viable, proposals.”
Peckford adds that no matter who wins this election, the new government should immediately take the opportunity to increase CMHC’s capacity, get these projects off the ground, and stipulate the use of Canadian materials in every way possible.
