Environmental assessment underway for proposed battery storage project in Edwardsburgh Cardinal

The wheels continue to turn for the proposed site of what would be Canada’s largest battery storage project.

Last May, Edwardsburgh Cardinal Township announced that Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator had chosen Potentia Renewables to build and run the Skyview 2 Battery Energy Storage Project.

The project, which would provide 411 megawatts of battery storage to
Ontario’s power grid, is a partnership between Potentia and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.

If it goes through, it would be built on 30 acres of rural land about 1 kilometre north of Dobbie Road, away from homes.

An environmental assessment is currently underway for the project which is a provincial requirement, and will include hearing from the public.

Officials say the facility would help stabilize Ontario’s electrical grid by storing excess power during low-demand periods and supplying it when demand is high.

It’s expected the site should be up and running by 2027.
