Police issue warning over telephone scams

You’re being warned to watch closely for scams as more victims continue to fall prey.

The Ontario Provincial Police say scammers are using the force’s non-emergency telephone number to legitimize fraudulent bank investigator scams.

They involve victims being tricked into believing they must help catch a dishonest bank employee or resolve suspicious transactions by giving over personal information or transferring funds.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre are also warning you about ongoing phishing schemes where scammers claim to represent the RCMP.

Police say you shouldn’t trust your caller ID with scammers able to spoof legitimate numbers to deceive you.

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and verify the claims by contacting your bank or the organization directly.
