Wet summer means leaves turning colour early in some areas

If you’ve noticed the leaves in some areas appear to be turning colour for the fall earlier than expected you’re not wrong.

With all of the rain we’ve seen this summer, especially over the last month, under mostly cloudy days not as much sunlight is hitting the trees.

That means they aren’t getting as much chlorophyll, the compound that makes trees green.

Kemptville Campus Greenhouse Manager Claude Smith says we are about three weeks ahead of where we should be for leaf colours in some regions.

“The more the temperatures fluctuate it kind of tricks them (trees) into starting to go dormant and that’s when you see the colours appear on the leaves.”

If you’re a maple syrup fan Smith says there’s no need to worry, the early fall colours wont have any impact on production.
