Update: Galaxy Cinemas Brockville closing for good on Sunday

The closure of Galaxy Cinemas in Brockville will substantially impact the community.
That’s according to Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Pam Robertson with the multiplex set to shut its doors for good at the end of the day on Sunday.

It comes with Cineplex officials saying the theatre’s lease was up and they decided not to renew it.

Robertson says the theatre is a community hub where people, both young and older, go to get out and enjoy the experience.

She says its closing will be felt on a number of levels.

“Some people come in and do a dinner and a movie, so the restaurants will be impacted, some people come in and after a movie go shopping, retail will be impacted that way.”

Robertson adds that she feels movie theatres are still relevant despite the rise of online streaming at home, pointing to last year’s Barbie movie popularity as an example.

With the theatre closing, Robertson says the chamber will look at options including advocating for a new cinema and working with the Brockville Arts Centre to show more films there.
