A Kemptville school is one of over 300 in the province built with the same material that deteriorated and caused the closure of the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto.
In a post on its website, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario reports that Holy Cross Catholic School has Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete within its structure.
RAAC panels are a lightweight, precast form of concrete that was commonly used in construction between the 1950s and 1980s.
School officials say the board has developed an RAAC management strategy which was shared with the Ministry of Education last fall. It includes ongoing preventative maintenance and regular inspections with the schools remaining open.
All families at the school have received a letter with the information.
