Health Unit considering merging with organizations in Kingston, Belleville

Local Health Unit officials are looking into a merger they say could “enrich” its ability to deliver healthcare to residents.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District (LGLD) Health Unit has announced that it’s “investigating the feasibility” of merging with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health, as well as Kingson, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Public Health.

Staff say the idea for the merger came after an announcement Ontario’s Ministry of Health made in August, offering one-time funding and support for organizations that merge.

“We continue to work positively with our neighbouring health units,” said Peter McKenna, Chair for the LGLD Board of Health. “We look forward to continuing conversations about how a voluntary merger could enrich local public health service delivery in our region.”

Staff say all three Boards of Health will need to decide whether to go forward with the merger and submit a proposal by March 2024.

We’ve contacted the Health Unit requesting an interview with Peter McKenna to learn more.
