UCDSB hosting information sessions on bell time changes

Start times at local schools could be changing next year, and you have a chance to learn more about why later this month.

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is hosting in-person consultations as it prepares to change the bell times at its schools.

The change would see elementary students start learning earlier in the day and secondary students start later, based on research showing that teenagers need more sleep than younger students.

There’s currently no timeline for when bell times will change.

Right now, secondary students start at 8:00 AM, and elementary students start between 9:20 and 9:30.

The consultations are happening on November 27th at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute, and on the 29th at Tagwi Secondary School in Avonmore.

They’ll feature a panel of local doctors and experts explaining the reasons for the proposed change, and attendees will be able to give their feedback on the idea.

An online feedback form and video explaining the proposal will also be posted to the UCDSB website in early December.
