Mayor Peckford hopes to “engage youth leaders” with Mayor for a Day contest

As a mother, Mayor Nancy Peckford says she understands that teenagers have a lot of opinions, and she hopes to give them a platform to share them.

The Municipality of North Grenville is running a “Mayor for a Day” contest this month, where high school students can apply for the chance to spend a day shadowing Peckford.

“They’ll be sworn in symbolically, as Mayor of the Day, in the morning,” Peckford says. “They’ll meet all members of council, a series of stakeholders, and get to talk about issues that really matter to them.”

To take part, students need to fill out an application form outlining the ways they want to see North Grenville improve.

Peckford says she wants to use this contest as a chance to “engage youth leaders,” since they represent North Grenville’s future.

“It’s about your ideas,” Peckford adds, “and I know there are lots and lots of students in North Grenville who have a lot of ideas and a lot of thoughts about how we’re growing, and how we’re changing, and what we can do to better serve youth in our community. So, this is a great opportunity.”

The deadline to submit an application is on Monday, October 9th. The form is on the Municipality’s website.
