Police officers in our region are launching a new, special initiative to help people who are at risk of a life-threatening habit they call “wandering.”
The Leeds and Grenville County OPP detachments are partnering with the Alzheimer’s Society of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville for the program, called “Project Lifesaver.”
Officers say the program is meant to help quickly protect and locate people who go missing and have a difficult time navigating because of diseases like dementia or disabilities like autism.
“Those who are at a high risk of becoming lost receive a bracelet transmitter, with a unique frequency,” explains Provincial Constable Dave Holmes. “When a client is lost, receivers housed in the Leeds County OPP and Grenville County OPP Detachments are used to find that unique frequency.”
Project Lifesaver was started by a nonprofit organization in Virginia in 1999.
Since then, the program has become available all over the United States and in several Canadian communities.
