New, expanded Truth and Reconciliation ceremony coming to North Grenville September 30th

Mayor Nancy Peckford says the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation won’t be commemorated at the North Grenville Municipal Centre this year.

Instead, the ceremony is being hosted at the nearby Ferguson Forest Centre.

Past years have seen flags lowered outside the Municipal Centre and speeches by local Indigenous figures, but Peckford says it’s being expanded this year with help from the Indigenous Advisory Circle.

“We’d like to also have residents here in North Grenville hear and benefit from some Indigenous-led entertainment,” Peckford adds. “We’re going to have a throat singer coming, we’re going to have other music from some First Nations artists.”

Peckford hopes the event gives people an opportunity to learn more about Indigenous Culture.

“We really want to create a relaxed but educational environment for people to come together and learn more,” she says.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is September 30th.
