Warden says United Counties need to be “far more proactive” about affordable housing

Nancy Peckford says she hopes the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville’s upcoming Affordable Housing Summit brings people together to talk about the community’s needs.

Peckford, the Warden for the United Counties and the Mayor of North Grenville, says the need for more affordable housing in our region has become very clear over the last few years.

“It became really obvious that we needed to be far more proactive establishing and creating opportunities to build more affordable housing,” Peckford explains, “and to build a diversity of housing that would really respond to the needs of all ages and stages of life throughout the Counties.”

The summit, scheduled for September 29th, is open for anyone in the region to attend. Peckford says it’s an opportunity for people to come together and “brainstorm innovative solutions” to the housing crisis.

“It’s really, really tough, in this inflationary environment, to build affordably and to build well,” she adds. “We know there’s lots of good intentions, but, quite frankly, we need to find our way to faster and better solutions, and that’s really what the summit is about.”

To take part, you’ll need to sign up in advance online. There’s a $50 registration fee. You can call United Counties staff at 613-342-3840 for details on how to register.
