OPP warning of phone spoofing scammers targeting region

OPP officers have put out a warning on the East Region social media pages warning about a “bank investigator” scam targeting people in the area.

They say the fraudsters are “spoofing” their phone number to appear legitimate and calling people claiming there have been suspicious charges on their credit card or online bank account.

If you get a call like this, officers say you should tell whoever you speak to that you’ll call them back.

Then, you can call the number on the back of your bank card to verify if the call was legitimate.

Police are also warning residents to avoid sending any money, and to never give a caller remote access to your computer.

If you think you’ve been a victim of a scam like this, you can report it to the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
