Health Unit warns of Norovirus spreading through region

Make sure you wash your hands regularly and you stay home from work or school if you start to feel nauseous, have stomach cramping, or begin vomiting.

That’s from the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit. The organization has issued a statement with advice for how residents can avoid spreading Norovirus.

The virus is one of the major causes of gastroenteritis, commonly called “stomach flu,” in both kids and adults.

Health Unit Communications Coordinator Susan Healey says many regions across the province have reported an increase in Norovirus infections and outbreaks, in part because of loosening COVID-19 health and safety restrictions.

“These restrictions and precautions were also very effective in preventing common seasonal illnesses such as Norovirus,” Healey explains. “While Norovirus cases are not reported individually in Ontario, the Health Unit has investigated several outbreaks in day care centres and retirement homes where Norovirus was identified or highly suspected as the cause.”

Beyond washing your hands and staying home when you’re sick, Healey also says you should disinfect surfaces and objects, like countertops and phones, that ill people might have been in contact with.

You can find more information about Norovirus on the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit website.
