Health Unit issues advice for National Non-Smoking Week

If you’ve been struggling to quit smoking, staff members at the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit are offering some guidance.

The organization has issued a statement with some advice for residents to mark National Non-Smoking Week, an annual awareness initiative to help people quit the habit. This year, it runs from January 15th to 21st.

“Quitting smoking or vaping can be one of the most difficult things to do,” explains Communications Coordinator Susan Healey. “It can take a few tries before you succeed. Each time you try to quit, you increase your chances of being smoke free for good. Making the decision to quit is a personal choice. Preparation and planning can increase the chances for a successful quit attempt.”

Healey says one way people can start the process of giving up smoking is by monitoring their habit, to identify what triggers their craving for a cigarette. After identifying your triggers, she says you can consciously choose a healthier alternative to alleviate the craving.

She also recommends changing your environment, like making your home and car smoke-free, to reduce the amount of tobacco around you, and quitting alongside a friend, so you can hold each other accountable.

You can find more information on how to quit smoking, and local resources you can use like in-person consultations at the Health Unit’s offices, on the organization’s website.
