Health Unit: first case of influenza diagnosed in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark

Flu season is officially here.

That’s according to an announcement from the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, which says the first case has been diagnosed in the region, and others have been identified in the surrounding area.

“This first flu case has been identified approximately one month earlier than the first case in a typical flu season before COVID-19,” the announcement reads, “which may be an indication of a prolonged and severe flu season this year.”

Health Unit workers are urging residents to take proactive steps to avoid contracting the illness, like washing your hands, cleaning things you touch frequently, and getting vaccinated against influenza.

According to the announcement, the organization doesn’t plan to host community flu shot clinics this year.

“We are recommending that you get your flu shot at your local pharmacy or through your healthcare provider,” it says. “Most pharmacy clinics will be open and available to the public seven days a week and with evening hours.”
