Ontario Fish and Wildlife calling for submission of bear teeth for study

With the fall black bear season open across much of Ontario, the provincial government is asking hunters to send it a portion of their catch.

Ontario Fish and Wildlife is calling for residents to take part in the government’s “voluntary black bear tooth submission” program, sending teeth from the animals to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

According to the province’s website, these teeth are used to determine the age of the bear, which helps the Ministry assess how sustainable black bear hunting is and manage the population of the animals.

If you include your Outdoors Card number when you send your teeth, the Ministry will send you a commemorative crest and the age of the bear you hunted as thanks for your submission.

You’ll also need to include the sex of the bear and the wildlife management unit you hunted it in with any submissions.

You can find a guide for which teeth to remove and how to send them on the Ontario government’s website here.
