Ontario Green Party Leader disavows proposed Kemptville prison

Mike Schreiner is calling for the Ontario government to cancel its plans to build a prison in Kemptville.

“I call on the government to listen to local residents who are going to court seeking a prohibition order that will stop construction of the proposed prison,” says Schreiner, the leader of the Ontario Green Party and MPP for Guelph.

One of Schreiner’s major concerns surrounding the prison is the planned location, since construction will require 170 acres of farmland near the Kemptville Campus to be paved over.

“Ontario needs policies and programs that drive progress towards more healthy and sustainable communities that take care of their most vulnerable members,” he says. “Paving over prime farmland to build a prison is the exact opposite of that.”

We’ve reached out to Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP Steve Clark for comment.
