Health Unit: Merrickville Beach “unsafe for swimming”

The results from the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit’s first beach water tests of the summer have come in.

The organization released the results Thursday morning, and it says Merrickville Beach is currently unsafe for swimming.

A sign has been posted at the beach warning people to avoid swimming there, and it’s been added to a list of unsafe beaches on the Health Unit’s website.

The news comes after the organization resumed its summertime water testing program earlier this week.

The program tests water samples from local beaches for E. coli, a bacteria that can cause ear, eye and throat infections when swimmers are exposed to high concentrations of it.

The Rideau Ferry Yacht Club’s public beach in Lanark County has also been deemed unsafe to swim in by the Health Unit.

The next test results will be posted on Friday, July 8th.
