OPP Provincial Constable talks Canada Road Safety Week

Dave Holmes, an officer with the Grenville County OPP detachment, says this year might see the most motorist deaths in our province in a decade.

“We just had a recent report released yesterday from our head office,” Holmes says, “that speaks to 107 fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads so far this year.”

“Not since 2012 have we seen that number breach 100 in just the second week of May,” he continues, “so it’s up quite a bit.”

May 17th to 23rd is Canada Road Safety Week, a national campaign meant to encourage safe, responsible driving across the country.

Holmes says one of the major focuses for the campaign is to stop drunk and impaired drivers.

“It’s really hard to believe that that’s something we still need to talk about,” he says, “but it’s something we’re going to focus on this week across Canada.”

If you see a driver you think might be impaired, Holmes says you should call police as soon as you can.

“If you’re seeing something where a vehicle is on the road, and you believe that driver may be impaired, that would be considered an emergency situation where the most appropriate use would be 9-1-1.”

He also says you should try and get as much information on the vehicle as you can, like its license plate number or a description of the vehicle or driver, but shouldn’t follow them, for your own safety.

“We’re extremely grateful when the public does call these things in,” he says, “and I know that we do our best to try and call the complainants back and let the public know that we appreciate these kinds of phone calls.”
