Rideau Valley Conservation Authority issues water safety statement

With our region under a flood watch, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority is offering some advice to make sure your home doesn’t flood.

The organization says no major flooding is expected in the region, but people whose homes are near creeks or streams need to be careful, since the weather over the next few days could make water levels rise significantly.

If you live near a body of water, the organization says you should make sure your sump pump is clear, working properly, and that you have a backwater valve installed in your home. It also says you should have a backup generator and pump available in case there’s a power outage.

The inconsistent temperatures are also expected to affect the thickness of any ice on top of creeks and streams in our area, so if your kids like to play on one near your home, the organization recommends you should tell your kids to be careful on them, and keep a close eye on them to make sure they don’t fall through.

The water safety statement is in effect until Wednesday at 5:00 PM, or until the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority issues an update on the situation. MyKemptvilleNow.com will update this article with any new information.
