Woman Facing Mischief Charges After Damaging Pride Crosswalk

Just one day after being painted, downtown Kemptville’s rainbow crosswalk has been damaged.

According to Grenville County OPP, on Tuesday evening, community members noticed someone damaged the crosswalk by burning their tires over the rainbow colours at the corner of Prescott Street and Reuben Crescent, leaving a big black mark.

Mayor Nancy Peckford says the act just proves that Pride is needed in Kemptville.

“It’s a learning process for everyone,” Peckford said. “The whole point of Pride month is for people to learn more about why it’s needed and why it’s recognized, as well as the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.”

The OPP says after attending the area, observing the tire marks, and speaking to witnesses, they were able to identify the person responsible.

As a result, a 36-year-old North Grenville woman is being charged with mischief.

Peckford says while it’s unfortunate that this incident took place, the crosswalk still stands as a symbol of hope and tolerance in the community.

“Ultimately, we appreciate the efforts of Kemptville Pride and the municipality in this instance to create the rainbow crosswalk,” Peckford said. “It’s a small gesture but a symbolic one.”

The woman will be in a Brockville Courtroom on July 9.

Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to reach out to Grenville County OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
