"Ottawa remains a safe city": Acting OPS Chief Jill Skinner, as arrest is made in Boxing Day shooting

An arrest has been made in the Boxing Day shooting at the Tanger Outlet Mall, resulting in a number of charges. Ottawa Police report 26-year-old Yaqoub Ali of Ottawa was arrested yesterday. He faces a list of charges related to the possession of a restricted firearm, discharging a firearm with intent to wound, and endangering the lives or safety of the public. Police also executed a search warrant at a residence in the east end of the City.

Acting Police Chief Jill Skinner said yesterday that gun violence and gang activity is a priority and this arrest is a direct result of hard work by officers. Investigations into other Ottawa shootings remain underway and police are increasing the number of investigators on those cases. In 2014, Ottawa Police arrested 83 gang members and associates and seized 53 guns used in crimes. Skinner says Ottawa remains a safe city and police are committed to addressing these crimes.
